Training a police dog to find objects by smell underwater

Dogs have a highly developed sense of smell – up to 300 million olfactory receptors (humans have about 5 million). Thanks to her, they can identify individual components of an odor, to follow a scent trail, to locate objects or people underground, or under snow – even under water.

And how is it possible that dogs can detect objects under water; Tiny traces of odor escape from the water into the air – so-called gaseous odor molecules, which reach the surface. In calm waters, the smell is concentrated in one spot. The dog cannot see in the water – but above the surface it detects the concentration of the smell, which rises upwards.
