Varosha: the ghost town of Cyprus

The Varosha or Varosha, is a ghost town in the southern part of the town of Famagusta. Before the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, It was the modern tourist resort of Famagusta. Its inhabitants fled during the invasion, where and came under Turkish control and egkateleimeni remained occupied by the Turkish armed forces since. The entrance is forbidden to the public. Since 2015 the city still remains abandoned with population 0.

During their heyday, Varosha was not just the No. 1 tourist destination in Cyprus, but between 1970 and 1974, He was one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and was the favourite destination of celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, the Richard Burton, the Raquel Welch and Brigitte Bardot.
