Before & After VFX: Blade Runner 2049 Before and after applying the digital effects to various scenes of Blade Runner 2019 - Fixing dents on an Audi RS4 Mat left his Audi RS4 to a colleague who had the misfortune to beat him. As Mat Watson is dedicated (among other things) to making videos for Carwow, he decided to take the opportunity to document how the aluminum panels of modern cars are repaired. Aluminum is not as easy to work as steel, since it has no memory effect, and requires expert hands, a lot of eye and patience to be repaired.

- Two New Magnetic Toys Firstly, we have an example of diamagnetic levitation. Diamagnetic materials are repelled by both the north and the south pole of a regular magnet. However the effect is a very weak one. Water is diamagnetic, and also a substance called pyrolytic graphite, which we show here. With a small2 x 2 array of powerful neodymium magnets, it is possible to levitate a small piece of pyrolytic graphite. However this is a variant of that, and it involves an array of neodymium magnets, with small pieces of pyrolytic graphite floating freely above the array. The second toy involved correlated magnets. This type of magnetism was only invented in 2008. Basically correlated magnets normally work in pairs, and have a complex arrangement of magnetic elements (maxels) on their surface; these can vary in size, orientation and location. In combination, the two magnets can be made to attract at a distance, but repel if they get too close (a combination of longer range and shorter range magnetic forces). In this example, the magnets are extremely hard to separate when they are in one orientation, but if you rotate them 180 degrees, they can be separated more easily. We will probably see a number of applications in coming years for this very new technology.

- Disney technology before green screen The sodium vapor process is a filmmaking technique for combining actors and background shots. It originated in the British film industry in the late 1950s and was used extensively by Walt Disney Productions in the 1960s and 1970s as a solution before the green screen technology we know today. The filming used sodium vapor lamps in front of which the shots were shot. A beam-splitter camera is used to expose the two separate elements of the film. The main element is normal color negative film which is insensitive to sodium light and the other a black and white film which is highly sensitive to the specific wavelength produced by sodium vapor. In this way the actors' figures could be combined with a different background and captured with great color accuracy in a final film. Production studio Corridor Digital has released a video showing a modern application of the sodium vapor process, using a custom filter developed by Paul Debevec.
