On November 14, 2024, In an unusual incident, Maori MPs interrupted a meeting of New Zealand Parliament by performing traditional Haka dance. They were complaining about the proposed legislation that would change the interpretation of the 184 -year -old Waitangi Treaty, considered the founding document of New Zealand. The condition, signed in 1840 between British Crown and more than 500 Maori leaders, defines the rules of common governance and continues to influence the country's legislation and policy to date.
The proposed legislation, introduced by New Zealand Act Party, the smallest partner of coalition in the center -right government, seeks to secure a closer interpretation of the Waitangi Treaty. Some critics say it could limit the rights of native Maori, which make up about 20% of 5,3 million inhabitants of the country. During a preliminary vote for the bill, Maori MPs got up and danced the Haka dance, leading to temporary suspension of parliament.
Protests against the bill were not limited to parliament. Thousands of people marched from Northern New Zealand to the capital Wellington, in a nine -day protest to express their opposition to the proposed legislation.
