Lithium in a glass of water

A young man tries an experiment, throw a large lithium-piece in a glass of water. Removed from a lithium battery and plunged into a glass of water to see his reaction. Lithium caught fire and the enormous amount of heat liberated broke the glass. Lithium is an alkali metal that easily reacts with air or water. When in contact with water, The chemical reaction releases hydrogen (H2) which can cause fire or explosion.
