Cape York Peninsula, Australia. Hammerhead sharks are specialized predators that often feast on rays. Their uniquely shaped heads allow them to accurately detect prey even when buried in the sand. However, rays are not defenseless – some species can lunge upwards and literally leap out of the water when attacked, trying to shake off the shark. Others defend themselves with a sharp tail spine that can injure a predator.
