Snapping turtle bites man twice Two friends went fishing in Burlington, Massachusetts last Friday hoping to catch something with artificial fishing lures. But two large snapping turtles hindered their progress. Michael Ganley and Victor Sanchez visited the local fishing spot. Bike theft attempt I have my bike sitting in the front yard with TheBlankTrigger attached to test how effective it is on a bike. Apparently, this thief didn't want to steal a bike with flat tires (too much work). Thankfully, I have motion sensors in my front yard (who doesn't?) and I assumed it was birds eating my new grass seed (yes I know the yard looks like crap, work in progress). I'm glad I checked my cameras just in time to catch him in my yard, and with how fast he ran, he didn't need the bike anyway.

Rescuing a Cute Koala Occurred on August 27, 2017 / Ulupna Island Murray River, Victoria, Australia "A group of students with a sessional lecturer from Latrobe University Bendigo Outdoor and Environmental Education degree were canoeing on the Murray River at Ulupna Island. We had been on the river since Thursday and there was minor flood levels at the time which is quite normal for the area. Sunday morning we stopped on the banks to check a fast flowing section when we saw this koala sitting in the branch of a tree that was surrounded by water. Matt, one of the students paddled closer to get a photo and noticed the koala was eyeing off his canoe and looked to be trying to get closer and maybe jump on board, so he pushed the boat over closer to the tree and the koala jumped on board straight away to be ferried back to shore. Once he was back on dry land you could see his back legs were wet so we guessed that he has maybe tried to swim back to shore but decided the current was maybe too strong. Once back on shore the koala didn't seem worried about us being there at all and stuck around for a while taking a drink from the river."

Phase-Functioned Neural Networks for Character Control We present a real-time character control mechanism using a novel neural network architecture called a Phase-Functioned Neural Network. In this network structure, the weights are computed via a cyclic function which uses the phase as an input. Along with the phase, our system takes as input user controls, the previous state of the character, the geometry of the scene, and automatically produces high quality motions that achieve the desired user control. The entire network is trained in an end-to-end fashion on a large dataset composed of locomotion such as walking, running, jumping, and climbing movements fitted into virtual environments. Our system can therefore automatically produce motions where the character adapts to different geometric environments such as walking and running over rough terrain, climbing over large rocks, jumping over obstacles, and crouching under low ceilings. Our network architecture produces higher quality results than time-series autoregressive models such as LSTMs as it deals explicitly with the latent variable of motion relating to the phase. Once trained, our system is also extremely fast and compact, requiring only milliseconds of execution time and a few megabytes of memory, even when trained on gigabytes of motion data. Our work is most appropriate for controlling characters in interactive scenes such as computer games and virtual reality systems.
