In Hungary (but also elsewhere in Central Europe, such as the Netherlands or Denmark), thatching is a craft with a long tradition. Master thatchers who specialize in thatching are called nádtetős in Hungarian (nádtető = thatched roof, made of reeds). It is a craft that requires great skill, precision and experience, because it is not just about “throwing straw on the roof” – it must be made to be resistant to water, wind, snow and even fire (it is often impregnated with special preparations).
