More detailed footage of the 6lb. mercury balloon pop video showing the interesting splash from the mercury as it hits the bottom of the tub. I added some sound effects just for fun. Mercury is nearly 14 times heavier by volume than water (aka “denser”) and is denser than lead.

Mission 9: Safe Escape In Any Phase Of Flight New Shepard flew for the ninth time on July 18, 2018. During this mission, known as Mission 9 (M9), the escape motor was fired shortly after booster separation. The Crew Capsule was pushed hard by the escape test and we stressed the rocket to test that astronauts can get away from an anomaly at any time during flight. The mission was a success for both the booster and capsule. Most importantly, astronauts would have had an exhilarating ride and safe landing. This isn’t the first time we’ve done this type of extreme testing on New Shepard. In October of 2012, we simulated a booster failure on the launch pad and had a successful escape. Then in October of 2016, we simulated a booster failure in-flight at Max Q, which is the most physically strenuous point in the flight for the rocket, and had a completely successful escape of the capsule. This test on M9 allowed us to finally characterize escape motor performance in the near-vacuum of space and guarantee that we can safely return our astronauts in any phase of flight. Also on M9, New Shepard carried science and research payloads from commercial companies, universities and space agencies. Rescue a dog in a frozen lake Harlem-Roscoe firefighters were dispatched to a call on the Legends Lake in Roscoe for a man on the ice trying to rescue his dog that had fallen through thin ice into the lake on Dec. 11, 2017. It seems the dog's owner found his dog in the water and tried using a kayak on the ice to get to him. About half way out he broke through the ice himself and was now in the water. First in units arrived on scene and Lt. Justin Mayton donned a cold water suit and firefighters secured him to a safety rope. He then headed out onto the ice with a second Kayak that was on scene. He reached the owner of the dog and the dog's owner was able to climb into the kayak. Mayton was then able to reach the dog and he and the dog were pulled back to the shore by the firefighters on the shore. A rope was also then thrown to the owner in the Kayak and he was pulled safely to the shore. The dog and the owner were warmed up in the ambulance and taken home. Since 2012, Sea Shepherd has been a part of a joint fight to get the Australian Government to release rare whaling footage obtained on a 2008 Australian Customs mission to the Antarctic. Here is the footage that the Australian Government filmed with tax payers' money, of the Japanese whaling fleet illegally whaling in Antarctica, in Australian waters. The footage was filmed as part of gathering evidence for the International Court of Justice, which found Japans whaling to be illegal. Sea Shepherd has been relentless in their opposition to the Japanese whaling fleet, filling a void in doing the job that the majority of Australian’s want to see done. Now is the time for the Australian Government to send a vessel to oppose whaling by Japan and take Japan to the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea.
Primitive Technology: Natural Draft Furnace I built a natural draft furnace to test ideas about how hot a furnace could get without the use of bellows. Natural draft is the flow of air through a furnace due to rising hot air. The hot gasses in the fuel bed are more buoyant than the cold air outside the furnace causing them to rise. Fresh combustion air then enters the base of the furnace to replace the rising combustion gasses, keeping the fuel bed burning. This effect increases with: 1. the average temperature of the fuel bed relative to the outside air and 2. The height of the furnace. Two other important factors are the size of the tuyere (air entry pipe) and lump size of the fuel bed as these effect the resistance to airflow through the furnace. The furnace was tested with wood fuel and some ore was melted but produced no iron. High temperature were indeed produced (probably about 1200 c). These types of furnaces were once used for smelting copper and iron ores in around the world in ancient times, usually using charcoal as a fuel and in some cases wood too.
