- How to Land the Space Shuttle… from Space Presented on Halloween (October 31st) at Stack Overflow’s 2016 Remote Meetup in Philadelphia. This was one of nine "Tiny Talks" given over three days at the meetup. Every year, employees submit Tiny Talk ideas on a wide range of topics (some completely random and not company-related at all, like this one) and we vote on which ones we want to hear. So, thank you to my coworkers for voting me in. Original proposal description I submitted for this talk: Let's say you're traveling at about 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 km/h) in low earth orbit, your main engines are out of fuel, and it's your job to guide the spaceship through a fiery re-entry without burning up or skipping out of the atmosphere, navigate to your landing site, and arrive with just enough energy to make an unpowered landing on a runway which is halfway around the planet from where you started. And, of course, either you succeed on your first try, or everyone dies. So, no pressure…. In this talk, I'll show you how space shuttle designers, pilots, and autopilots managed to do just that.

- NASA & TRAPPIST-1: A Treasure Trove of Planets Found Seven Earth-sized planets have been observed by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope around a tiny, nearby, ultra-cool dwarf star called TRAPPIST-1. Three of these planets are firmly in the habitable zone. Over 21 days, NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope measured the drop in light as each planet passed in front of the star. Spitzer was able to identify a total of seven rocky worlds, including three in the habitable zone, where liquid water might be found. The video features interviews with Sean Carey, manager of the Spitzer Science Center, Caltech/IPAC; Nikole Lewis, James Webb Space Telescope project scientist, Space Telescope Science Institute; and Michaël Gillon, principal investigator, TRAPPIST, University of Liege, Belgium. The system has been revealed through observations from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and the ground-based TRAPPIST (TRAnsiting Planets and PlanetesImals Small Telescope) telescope, as well as other ground-based observatories. The system was named for the TRAPPIST telescope.

- Jupiter Impact March 17th 2016 the planet at about 3 o'clock. This video shows an apparent impact on Jupiter. If you look to the right side of the planet you will notice a brief bright flash. This is suspected to be a comet or asteroid measuring in the tens of meters across. Even such a small object causes a huge energy release when it impacts Jupiter's cloud tops, enough to be seen by amateur telescopes here on Earth.

- After A 9-Year Journey, This Spacecraft Will Finally Reach Pluto Imagine the stretch of outer space along the Milky Way like a 4.67 billion mile highway from planet Earth to Pluto, the former most-distant planet. Imagine NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, an interplanetary space probe, has been traveling along that highway for nine and a half years since its launch from Earth in January of 2006. This week, on July 14th, at approximately 7:50 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, New Horizons will fly past Pluto and its five moons. Realistically, it's the first time we'll ever see Pluto. We have zoomed in on images from the Hubble, but the resolution is highly pixelated and leaves a whole lot of mystery to this distant body. You can follow along on the flyby on NASA TV live broadcast program, which will be live streaming all active communications from the spacecraft.
