Wildlife Encounters of Gretna is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that is dedicated to educating the public about our natural world while offering a home for animals in need. We’re excited to welcome back Kip Smith. He’s going to teach us about a few animals, including a baby kangaroo.

BBC Documentary: Attenborough and the Empire of the Ants David Attenborough is in the Swiss Jura Mountains to discover the secrets of a giant. Beneath his feet lies a vast network of tunnels and chambers, home to a huge empire of ants. It is believed to be one of the largest animal societies in the world, where over a billion ants from rival colonies live in peace. Their harmonious existence breaks many of the rules for both ants and evolution, and raises some important questions. Through winter, spring and into summer, David turns detective to find the answers.
Rescue of a foal in the mud (Russia) Footage captures the touching moment police officers rescued a newborn foal near Shpakovsky District in Russia's Stavropol Region. The police arrived at the scene of a car accident to find a horse and foal stuck in mud nearby. The owner of the animals later explained that the foal was born shortly before the accident and the team was headed back to their stall when both horses broke loose. A police officer and the horses’ owner joined efforts to pull the foal out of mud. The mother horse restlessly watched her baby emerging from the sludge. The horses were later reunited with their herd, both reported to be in satisfactory condition.
Why no aquarium has a great white shark There are several aquariums around the world, including one in Georgia, that house whale sharks, the biggest fish in the sea. But not one has a great white shark on display. Aquariums have made dozens of attempts since the 1970s to display a captive great white shark. Most of those attempts ended with dead sharks. By the 2000s, the only group still trying was the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which spent a decade planning its white shark program. In 2004, it acquired a shark that became the first great white to survive in captivity for more than 16 days. In fact, it was on display for more than six months before it was released back into the ocean. In the following years, the Monterey Bay Aquarium hosted five more juvenile white sharks for temporary stays before ending the program in 2011. It was an expensive effort and had come under criticism due to injuries that some of the sharks developed in the tank. Responding to those critics, Jon Hoech, the aquarium's director of husbandry operations, said: "We believe strongly that putting people face to face with live animals like this is very significant in inspiring ocean conservation and connecting people to the ocean environment. We feel like white sharks face a significant threats out in the wild and our ability to bring awareness to that is significant in terms of encouraging people to become ocean stewards." Meet the cat ISU vets outfitted with very rare prosthetic legs Cindy Jones first laid eyes on Vincent the cat when he was just a month old. The tiny kitten was brought into the Story County Animal Shelter with injured hind legs, but Jones immediately fell in love. That love led her to the Iowa State veterinary hospital, where Dr. Mary Sarah Bergh, and veterinary orthopedics company BioMedtrix, had the idea to design implants that could be inserted into the femur bones of Vincent's legs and come out through the skin. The procedure is so rare, Bergh estimates fewer than 25 animals in the world have ever had a similar surgery. Vincent's recovery has been long, but his future looks bright. He already walks around very well, and his hind legs will continue to be lengthened until they are as long as his front legs. Dr. Bergh says he will even be jumping and doing other normal cat activities soon.
Baby deer rescue and release A deer doe abandoned one of her twin fawns, the fawn had injured leg and could not keep up with the mother. I do not support keeping wild animals as a pets, but this was special situation. The baby deer was healed and released back to her real mother.

Furry snake A week ago, in the swamps of the province of Sakon Nakhon (Thailand), a 60 cm green snake covered with fur was discovered. Sam Chatfield, who is snake species coordinator at Wildlife ARC, an organisation that rescues and cares for injured animals, said that the creature could be a puff-faced water snake with algae growing on its scales.

An elephant stuck in a hole is saved by tourists A baby elephant was heroically rescued after getting stuck in a hole - but the tourists on safari who helped save it were later devastated to discover the same animal torn apart by hyenas days later. In video dating from October 2014 from Chobe National Park in Botswana filmed by Czech national Pavel Merunko, the tourists enlist the help of some initially reluctant local rangers, who use heavy-duty chains to pull the elephant out of the hole - but only after they were paid 100 euros, according to Merunko. He says the elephant was seven-years-old and weighed two tons.
