I have found a paper on 'safety holes'... very interesting. One could argue that chicks that are not strong enough to get out of the egg by themselves should not survive. I have a different opinion.
To me all life is precious. So if I can save a chick by helping it, I will. The 'safety holes' are used when incubating rear and endangered bird species. It increases the chances of survival in the fiercely process of hatching.
Yet one has to be extremely careful. It happens easily that a chick get's injured.
This video is about the hatching of my emu eggs, the second largest eggs in the world. (and the most beautiful ones :)
The first Emu chick got out all by himself. The second one needed a little help.

- Primitive Technology: Natural Draft Furnace I built a natural draft furnace to test ideas about how hot a furnace could get without the use of bellows. Natural draft is the flow of air through a furnace due to rising hot air. The hot gasses in the fuel bed are more buoyant than the cold air outside the furnace causing them to rise. Fresh combustion air then enters the base of the furnace to replace the rising combustion gasses, keeping the fuel bed burning. This effect increases with: 1. the average temperature of the fuel bed relative to the outside air and 2. The height of the furnace. Two other important factors are the size of the tuyere (air entry pipe) and lump size of the fuel bed as these effect the resistance to airflow through the furnace. The furnace was tested with wood fuel and some ore was melted but produced no iron. High temperature were indeed produced (probably about 1200 c). These types of furnaces were once used for smelting copper and iron ores in around the world in ancient times, usually using charcoal as a fuel and in some cases wood too.

- Primitive Technology: Water powered hammer (Monjolo) I built a water powered hammer called a “Monjolo” (see also karausu (からうす) on google images). I started by making a water spout from half a hollow log to direct water from the creek. This was set up in the creek and water flowed through it. The hammer was made from a fallen tree. I cut it to size by burning it at the points I wanted it cut (to save effort chopping). Next I carved a trough in one end to catch falling water. This was done first with a stone chisel that was then hafted to an L–shaped handle and used as an adze. This adze only took about an hour to make as I already had the chisel head and cordage made of bark fibre to bind it with.
- MOTORCYCLE RIDER CRASHES/FALLS OFF CLIFF One of the craziest things I've ever seen. Also the rider is one of the luckiest guy in the world to be able to walk away from this with just a fractured shoulder. I'm not sure exactly how he lost control of the bike but the bike got stuck in the tree. Bike still runs after being caught by the tree. Not everyone gets as lucky as this. This should be a reminder to all of the dangers of riding in the canyons. If you have the need for speed, ride within your comfortable limits and always ride with a friend.

To get here we have to drive about 5 hours through Eastern Congo, the forest, and on awful dirt "roads" the entire time. Then we have to hike for over 1 hour with over 1 ton of tools, pipes, equipment, and bags of cement, gravel pack, and construction gravel/rocks! That was through the mud and around, under, and over trees in the second largest rainforest in the world. So thankful for the help of the Water4 team supporting our Fight For The Forgotten and Shalom University drilling team! We are currently working on our 15th water well for my Congo family :-)
