Sequoias are among the longest-living trees in the world. There are two main species of sequoias with extraordinary longevity. The giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) has an average lifespan of 2,000–3,000 years and is found mainly in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. The redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) has an average lifespan of 1,200–2,200 years and grows mainly on the California and Oregon coasts.
The tallest tree in the world, Hyperion (115.92 m), belongs to this species and is estimated to be 600–800 years old. In the tree in the video, a man compares human life to that of a very old sequoia. Sequoias are known not only for their longevity, but also for their ability to regenerate and resist fires, diseases and insects, which allows them to live to such extreme ages.
