Sequoias are among the longest-living trees in the world. There are two main species of sequoias with extraordinary longevity. The giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) has an average lifespan of 2,000–3,000 years and is found mainly in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. The redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) has an average lifespan of 1,200–2,200 years and grows mainly on the California and Oregon coasts.
The tallest tree in the world, Hyperion (115.92 m), belongs to this species and is estimated to be 600–800 years old.
