Primitive Technology: Natural Draft Furnace I built a natural draft furnace to test ideas about how hot a furnace could get without the use of bellows. Natural draft is the flow of air through a furnace due to rising hot air. The hot gasses in the fuel bed are more buoyant than the cold air outside the furnace causing them to rise. Fresh combustion air then enters the base of the furnace to replace the rising combustion gasses, keeping the fuel bed burning. This effect increases with: 1. the average temperature of the fuel bed relative to the outside air and 2. The height of the furnace. Two other important factors are the size of the tuyere (air entry pipe) and lump size of the fuel bed as these effect the resistance to airflow through the furnace. The furnace was tested with wood fuel and some ore was melted but produced no iron. High temperature were indeed produced (probably about 1200 c). These types of furnaces were once used for smelting copper and iron ores in around the world in ancient times, usually using charcoal as a fuel and in some cases wood too.

A semi diesel engine starts and jumps in all directions This video illustrates what happends when these two stroke semidiesels run out due to too much oil in the crankcase. With my left hand, I block the injection pump, so from that time the engine run on lube oil only, no diesel at all. I have heard lots of stories about this from decades ago but this is the first time, to my knowledge, that it is captured on video. Luckily we had blocked most of the air intake prior to starting and ended at somewhat over 1000 rpm. Max operating rpm is 425-450. With full air supply, I would guess this engine would reach thousands of rpm and I could only guess what would have happened then...
Bike theft attempt I have my bike sitting in the front yard with TheBlankTrigger attached to test how effective it is on a bike. Apparently, this thief didn't want to steal a bike with flat tires (too much work). Thankfully, I have motion sensors in my front yard (who doesn't?) and I assumed it was birds eating my new grass seed (yes I know the yard looks like crap, work in progress). I'm glad I checked my cameras just in time to catch him in my yard, and with how fast he ran, he didn't need the bike anyway.

thieves steal €100,000 of bikes from Dutch store This is the moment brazen thieves stole an estimated €100,000 worth of bikes from a shop in the Netherlands. CCTV footage released by the store in Udenhout — 30 kilometres north-west of Eindhoven — shows them running downstairs with multiple bikes at a time. The store has taken to social media to ask for the public’s help in tracking the thieves, who struck in the early hours of January 23. Store co-owner Frank Verschuren told Dutch media they walked back upstairs three times to get more bikes, despite the alarm going off.
Aluminum and Mercury When mercury is added to aluminum, it forms an amalgam (a mercury alloy). Aluminum is normally protected by a thick oxide layer, but the formation of the amalgam disrupts it. It allows fresh aluminum to react with air to form white aluminum oxide. As the oxide grows, it forms as these cool white fibers.
An air gun underwater This is a new invention I created, it is being manufactuered by H2Odyssey and will be available some time in September for around $130 at the store. Here is Underwater footage of two Scuba Divers shooting each other with Bubble Rings. The device is a Torid Pulse, it is a sort of Bubble Gun that attaches to the low pressure port of your scuba tank, just like a back up regulator. It will shoot round Bubble Rings up to about 35'. The device is easy and fun to operate, is low maintenance and does not seem to harm the environment, fish are indeferent and it only uses compressed air. On a typical dive of about 30' deep, you can stay submerged for about 45 minutes and still shoot 300 shots or so with out issues of air exhaustion.

So it’s definitely unbelievable what we’ve achieved here. It’s seriously unbelievable!”
