On the Qiantang River in Zhejiang Province, China, a boat sails through stunning waves that create the impression of traversing a dune landscape.

This is a manifestation of the famous Qiantang tidal phenomenon, of a phenomenon caused by the incoming tide rushing into the estuary and moving upstream. The funnel shape of Hangzhou Bay gradually concentrates water and tidal energy, creating a particularly strong tidal wave.

When seen from the boat and from this angle, the peaks appear almost stationary, forming an impressive relief. The color of water, laden with sediments, further enhances the illusion: it looks more like sand than the surface of a river.
