Father and daughter rescued by a kitesurfer
| 24/07/2026 |
On July 11, 2025 at Epanomi beach near Thessaloniki, a day of training turned into a rescue operation. Greek kitesurfer Anastasis Garipis and Spanish wingfoil champion Iset Segura spotted a Hungarian man and his 10-year-old daughter being swept out to sea by strong currents, since they started from a notoriously dangerous sandbank.
Garipis was the first to reach the two swimmers in danger. He gave them his board so they could float, before being followed about twenty minutes later by Iset Segura, which also lent them its equipment. The two athletes stayed with them for almost 45 minutes, until a rescue boat arrived. Father and daughter eventually made it safely back to the beach.
Their composure and courage were praised far beyond Greece. A few months later, Anastasis Garipis and Iset Segoura received the Gold Medal of Honor from the President of Hungary, an outstanding distinction that rewards their heroic deed.
