On February 22, 2022, at the MalaMala Game Reserve in South Africa, a pack of 21 African wild dogs spotted three klipspringers, small antelopes perfectly adapted to rocky terrain. Pursued by predators, the herbivores found refuge on a ledge at the edge of a cliff, where their agility made the difference.

The dogs then attempted to climb the rocks to reach their prey. But unlike antelopes whose sharp hooves are specially designed for navigating rocks, African wild dogs are not climbers. Despite several impressive efforts, they eventually gave up hunting without succeeding in displacing the antelopes, which remained motionless on the edge of the cliff until their pursuers left. Later that day, the herd turned its attention to an impala, a much more accessible prey.
