Feeding a skate
| 15/06/2026 |
In Valle Gran Rey, on the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands, Toño Magdaleno has an unusual daily ritual. Every day, he goes to the edge of the dock to feed a family of large sleds that come to meet him.
This story began about twenty years ago. At that time, Toño was a fisherman, and one of the skates, nicknamed 'Chucha', he regularly approached his boat to ask for sardines or mackerel. Over time, a real bond of trust developed between man and animal.
Today, Toño no longer only feeds Chucha, but several generations of fishermen who frequent the port. Accustomed to his presence, they come swimming within touching distance of him as soon as he arrives with his bucket of fish.
