In traditional Japanese schools (e.g. Iaijutsu and Iaido), there are techniques adapted to confined spaces – for example, in a room, hallway or with a low ceiling. The classic wide draw would not work there, so modified movements are used. When drawing a katana in confined spaces, shorter and more direct movements are used so that the sword does not hit the walls or ceiling. Active work with the scabbard (me) is important, which helps to “shorten” the draw. Techniques often use low stances and short, precise cuts or stabs instead of wide slashes. The goal is to hit the opponent quickly and effectively even in a confined space.
