A glass bowl will crack due to what is known as thermal shock, which occurs when there is a sudden change in temperature. If a container is hot from the oven and suddenly poured with cold tomato sauce straight from the refrigerator, the inside of the glass will cool down rapidly, while the outside will still be hot. This difference in temperature will cause stress in the material, which is unable to absorb these stresses, and therefore the glass will immediately crack or shatter.
