People react to being called beautiful I conducted an independent project, which evidently turned into a social experiment halfway through, regarding beauty at my performing arts high school in Chicago. I want to clarify that my intentions were not to get a reaction out of people. I was simply filming beauty and this is the result. Here it is.
JASON SILVA on THE POWER OF IDEAS "If Aristotle was alive today, he would be spitting his philosophical rifts onto his YouTube page," said Jason Silva. "As a student of philosophy, I refer to the greats: Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Descartes. But what of our modern day philosophers?" Enter Jason Silva, a performance philosopher and futurist, known as the "Timothy Leary of the Viral Video Age." Silva has the same access to knowledge as any one of us. He can read Steven Johnson's books or Plato's "Republic," but Silva is a young YouTube phenomenon who is making a point of exploring philosophy in an entirely new way, taking advantage of tools we all have but at the same time crave. He uses the power of creativity to express his ideas, chasing the unexpected predictability of the YouTube culture by creating quite incredible videos that captivate people's attention. This is what a contemporary audience is looking for: get the zeitgeist of what's going on and express it through a social media culture. He creates content that is accessible to anyone. He correlates information -- M&M's of knowledge -- and puts it together in a palatable format. "Ideas are powerful because they allow us to see the world as it could be, rather than what it is," said Silva. "Today, ideas take the form of information files, binary bits, 1's and 0's. We create media and launch it into the world, capable of instant consumption and real impact." Jason Silva encourages us to pursue our ideas with abandon.
AMERICAN REFLEXXX American Reflexxx is a short film documenting a social experiment that took place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Director Alli Coates captured performance artist Signe Pierce as she strutted down a busy oceanside street in stripper garb and a reflective mask. The pair agreed not to communicate until the experiment was completed, but never anticipated the horror that would unfold in under an hour. The result is a heart wrenching technicolor spectacle that raises questions about gender stereotypes, mob mentality, and violence in America.
Experiments with liquid oxygen! Liquid oxygen has a pale blue color and is strongly paramagnetic; it can be suspended between the poles of a powerful horseshoe magnet.
Because of its cryogenic nature, liquid oxygen can cause the materials it touches to become extremely brittle. Liquid oxygen is also a very powerful oxidizing agent: organic materials will burn rapidly and energetically in liquid oxygen. Further, if soaked in liquid oxygen, some materials such as coal briquettes, carbon black, etc., can detonate unpredictably from sources of ignition such as flames, sparks or impact from light blows. Petrochemicals, including asphalt, often exhibit this behavior.
