A man embarked on a simple experiment: to discover how much weight a glass Coca-Cola bottle could support before breaking.

He placed a support on the bottle and then began gradually stacking all sorts of heavy objects: weight plates, metal plates, and various other metal items. The pile became increasingly impressive, but the small bottle continued to resist.

It eventually took a load of approximately 580 kg before the glass finally gave way and the entire stack collapsed.

This impressive resistance is explained in part by the properties of glass, which is particularly strong when subjected to compressive force.
